Leading developers Sammut Group have lodged a development application for a stunning new apartment and retail project just 110 metres from Cronulla’s famed beaches, on a site they acquired in a record-breaking $38M deal earlier this year.
The proposal for 67 Gerrale Street includes the demolition of the existing residential flat building on the 1,301.2sqm property and the construction of a nine-storey mixed-use development comprising retail tenancies on the ground floor, three levels of basement parking and 24 luxury apartments on the levels above.
The four north-facing retail tenancies will front Gerrale Street and Beach Park Avenue on the ground floor activating the street fronts and providing security and surveillance improving the public space.
Sammut Group is also proposing to carry out works within Beach Park Avenue to revamp the walkway down to the beach as part of a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) in consultation with Sutherland Shire Council.
Sammut Group Director and CEO Allen Sammut said the proposed development will create the ‘missing link’ connecting the station to the beach, with both residential and retail activation.
“We were thrilled to be able to secure this amazing location as it has such potential to become another very key part of the local landscape that is attractive, vibrant and safe,” says Mr Sammut.
“The design is very in keeping with the relaxed, contemporary beach vibe that exemplifies the Cronulla lifestyle.
The 24 residential apartments will occupy eight levels above ground level, with the building gradually becoming set back as the building height increases.
The plan includes six x two-bedroom apartments and 18 x three-bedroom apartments that feature open-plan living spilling out to private outdoor open spaces.
Sammut Group Chief Operating Officer Julian Sammut said: “It’s a spectacular location and the planned design has been inspired by Cronulla’s culture.
“The development is elegant and timeless and will bring a breath of fresh air to Cronulla’s commercial centre.
“The retail spaces will provide pedestrian-friendly and safe shopping space that is designed to cater for the needs of all ages and abilities.”
“The development will bring employment opportunities to the area both during the construction phase and ongoing employment in the proposed retail spaces.“
Sammut Group purchased the site, including the 18-apartment block in February 2022 via agents Knight Frank for $38 million in an off-market strata amalgamation deal with 18 separate owners.
The Gerrale Street property is 110 metres from Cronulla Beach and 20 metres from the Cronulla Train Station. It is surrounded by amenity including an abundance of schools, with Westfield Miranda, Kareena Private Hospital and The Sutherland Hospital within a 10-minute drive.
Sammut Group is well-regarded for their award-winning work across Sydney and interstate, with projects including Banc and Breeze at Cronulla and a number of high-quality residential projects currently underway in the area and in planning elsewhere in Sydney and Queensland.
The business is also known for delivering ‘Nautilus’ on Woolooware Road overlooking Burraneer Bay – a 3,965sqm home set over six levels – which has garnered several awards, including HIA House of the Year and MBA House of the Year, for its architectural merit.
About Sammut Group
An unwavering pursuit of excellence has been proudly passed down through the generations of the Sammut family. Over 40 years ago, Paul Sammut, a prolific builder who created more than 200 homes across NSW, was the founding pillar and the driving force behind the vision for the broader enterprise; creating properties, precincts and destinations which surpassed the norms and expectations of an emerging industry at the time.
From generously oversized apartments with expansive balconies and luxurious landscaping that elevates neighbourhood standards, Sammut Group has always defied expectations, and continues to apply this approach to the luxury landscape of today.
Building on their father’s legacy, brothers Allen and John Sammut established Sammut Developments in 1993, creating a full-service property development business. In 2021, the third generation joined the business, with Julian Sammut taking on the role of Chief Operating Officer.
Together the directors have evolved the company to become Sammut Group, diversifying their project portfolio and creating new standards of experiential luxury and legacy across major residential, commercial and hospitality-centred ventures.
Sammut Group has a circa $1B pipeline of upcoming work across multiple projects including high-end residential, commercial, hospitality and retail developments in New South Wales and Queensland.
